A paper cutter is a tool used to cut well casing pipes in water, gas, or oil wells. It has internal cutting blades and can be operated using hydraulic or pneumatic power. Different models use various cutting principles, and workers should choose the largest cutter that fits inside the casing.

A paper cutter is a tool used to cut away a section of pipe or casing inside a well. These tools can be used to cut or remove pipes from water, gas or oil wells. Well casing pipes are designed to encapsulate the drilling and pumping mechanisms and to support the soil around the well to prevent cracking. They are placed in the well during the drilling process and remain there as materials are pumped out of the well over time. A paper cutter allows workers to cut this pipe when the well has reached the end of its useful life.

The standard letter opener is made from a durable tube made of tungsten and steel alloys. It has internal cutting blades that remain hidden inside the pipe until the cutter is activated. Workers use ropes or cables to lower the paper cutter to the correct height inside the shaft. Once positioned, the blades can be released to cut through the casing.

Different types of cutter models work using a variety of cutting principles. Some feature circular blades that extend perpendicular to the pipe walls. Others feature blades set on wings, or flaps, that open from the sides of the angled tube. Each of these systems can operate using either hydraulic or pneumatic power, which allows the paper cutter to generate the force needed to cut a steel or iron casing.

These tools cut the pipe from the inside out, and many rotate inside the casing to ensure a complete cut. After the cut is complete, operators retract the blades on the paper cutter and lift it out of the shaft. Then they remove the part of the wrap that was cut off during this process.

A paper knife is one of the simplest and most effective methods of removing existing well casings. Over time, these pipes can become clogged or corroded. The cutter allows operators to remove the pipe and re-insert a new sleeve if the well is still running. They also allow companies to safely exit wells by removing as much of the casing and surrounding mechanisms as possible.

When choosing a casing cutter, workers should select the largest cutter that will fit inside the casing. This helps ensure that the blades cut through the pipe. It’s also crucial to only extend the cutting blades and rotate the cutter just enough to cut the pipe. Continuing to lengthen the blades, or cutting too much, can damage the paper cutter and even cause it to get stuck in the shaft.
