A lift-up hinge allows for easy removal of doors or furniture without removing the hinge. It is useful for businesses with regular deliveries, moving furniture, maintenance, and security fencing. It evolved from portable furniture used since Roman times for moving consumer goods.

A lift-up hinge is a door or furniture hinge that can be separated into two parts, allowing you to remove a room or furniture door without having to remove the hinge. These hinges are useful for businesses where regular deliveries are made through a door and removing them will allow for more clearance. A lift-and-pull hinge has a solid pin on the hinge side mounted to the door frame and a hollow cylinder that fits over the pin attached to the door. Removing the door is done by simply lifting it up, which slides the cylinder off the pin and allows the door to be removed.

Furniture that needs to be moved may use a lift-up hinge, which may include cabinets or clothes closets called closets. Prior to the use of built-in wardrobes in homes by the mid-20th century, freestanding furniture was used for hanging and storing clothes. These cabinets could be quite large and sometimes had to be moved from room to room. The work was made easier by the possibility of removing the doors and internal shelves and reducing the weight of the furniture.

Some furniture could be taken apart from the design for travel and was called demolition or campaign furniture. The term “knockdown” came to define portable plastic containers and other flexible storage options in the 20th century. This included furniture that could be purchased as individual boxed pieces that were assembled by the homeowner. Earlier versions that used a liftable hinge for doors evolved from portable furniture used since Roman times for moving consumer goods. The traveler could quickly assemble the furniture when stopping for the night and easily disassemble it the next day to resume the journey.

A liftable hinge can also be useful as a maintenance item. Doors used in high traffic areas may require regular maintenance or repainting and quick door removal and replacement will make this easier. Homes with open floor plans, where walls are kept to a minimum to provide larger living areas, may have doors that can be added or removed as needed for privacy or security.

Security fencing is often used around the boundary or perimeter of homes or businesses, and gates are added to allow people or vehicles to enter and exit. A lift hinge system on gates can provide quick removal of gates when open access is needed. This may be necessary for large trucks or in areas where stronger winds could swing the gates and damage themselves or nearby equipment or buildings if they are opened and left on their hinges.
