Digital artists and the public are turning to light pens as a replacement for computer mice. Light pens are lightweight and can be used like a regular pen or mouse. They work for both right and left-handed individuals and some models are wireless. However, they can be fragile and take some getting used to. They are also more expensive than standard USB mice.

Artists are limited by the tools they use, and the only tool available to digital or computer artists in the past was the standard computer mouse. Increasingly though, digital artists and the general public are turning their attentions to the light pen as a solution to replace the cumbersome mouse. Light pens offer some advantages over standard computer mice, but they also have some disadvantages.

A light pen is a lightweight, pen-shaped pointing device. It can be used much like a regular pen, used to write or draw in computer software programs. An optical pen can also be used as a normal mouse, as it has a trackball to move objects and buttons to click. This unique input device can be used anywhere a normal mouse is used and does not require a special mouse pad.

Light pens work equally well for right-handed or left-handed individuals, although special models are available to facilitate the difference between writing and processing styles in these two groups. It doesn’t take up much storage space. Some models of light pens have the ability to be wireless, allowing them to rely on battery power and transmit a signal from the pointer to an input device which is commonly plugged into an empty USB slot on a computer.

One downside that many consumers have complained about is that light pens are often fragile and don’t require much effort to break. Some people find that working with light pens takes some getting used to, and that moving the pen in certain ways causes the input to become distorted. The price of a light stick is often much more than a standard USB mouse, yet the prices of both go down every year thereafter.
