What’s a Lock-in Party?

A lock-in party is a supervised event where teenagers are “locked in” until morning, usually held by schools or organizations. Chaperones ensure safety and prevent alcohol or substance use. It’s a safer way for teens to celebrate and create memories while staying out of trouble. Parents can recommend or help chaperone if their school doesn’t have one. Attendees can bring disposable cameras and sign each other’s shirts or journals to remember the occasion.

Often, especially towards the end of the school year, a school or organization sponsors a wrap party. Whether it’s a prom, graduation, or some other event, the school or group plans and organizes a night party. A church, scout group, or community center can also host a lock-in, and it can be held in the schoolyard or some other designated location.

A lock in party is a lot like a big sleepover, only everyone is “locked in” until morning. Students can only be supervised by their parents or guardians; otherwise, they are not allowed to leave. Chaperones are present to make sure participants stay safe and follow the rules. Of course, alcohol or other substances are not allowed and the escorts keep an eye on young amorous couples. If one of the boys tries to leave, her parents will be notified immediately.

Most of the time, there isn’t a real problem with keeping teens at the close of the party because they’re having a good time. It’s a safer way for kids to be together, dance, listen to music and stay up late talking and laughing. Lots of junk food, cold drinks, their own choice of music and some form of entertainment including silly games are usually enough to keep kids entertained. This type of party is a good way for teenagers to celebrate safely and stay out of trouble while doing so.

While there may be wild parties elsewhere, most parents feel better allowing their children to celebrate in a more structured and controlled way. If a school doesn’t have a wrap party after a big event, parents might recommend one or offer to help chaperone. Children should be able to celebrate and enjoy their successes, but few things are worse than having those occasions marred by tragedy. By having an organized and supervised party instead of leaving the kids to do their own thing, there’s a much better chance that teens will stay safe and have wonderful memories of their school years.

A fun idea is to give each person attending the party a shirt or journal and have the others sign it. Just like teenagers sign each other’s yearbooks, these shirts or journals can be used to save special feelings about the occasion. Kids may also want to bring along disposable cameras to capture party memories on film.
