Mailing list servers manage multiple email lists, with popular options being Majordomo and Listserv. They allow for remote storage and activation of lists, with some servers offering opt-in/opt-out functions and bounce-back management.

A mailing list server is a program that helps manage a number of separate mailing lists for a user or group of users. There are a number of mailing list server programs currently on the market. Two of the most popular list servers today are Majordomo and Listserv. A range of free list servers have also been implemented in recent years.

Mailing list servers are an excellent way to maintain several mailing lists without hogging resources on a local hard drive or even a local area network. Many businesses that use email lists to reach customers will scramble the lists and store them on the remote server. When necessary, the server is accessed and the appropriate list is activated for a given outgoing mail. The server then takes care of sending mail to all addresses included in the specified list.

Some of the more robust examples of the mailing list server include features that go beyond just storing email lists and using the lists in mass email campaigns. A very popular option is to allow the server to also handle the opt-in and opt-out functions for the addresses included in the list. This feature allows interested parties to subscribe and receive future mailings sent to the entire list. At the same time, the server offers the possibility for people who no longer want to receive messages to automatically remove the e-mail address from the list.

In addition to the ability to turn a particular list on or off, many of the more popular mailing list server programs also make deleting the list very simple. When an email is bounced back for some reason, the mailing list server can take note and be set to automatically strip the address or provide the list owner with details about the bounces. The owner can then choose to remove the bounce address from the list or allow continued inclusion.
