This table contains the base directory which drives the read and boot process. The partition table will work in conjunction with some type of bootloading software to interact with the operating system and complete the process successfully.

As with all sections of the hard drive, it is possible for the MBR to become corrupted. When this happens, the hard drive may be unable to boot. However, if the master boot record is still partially operational, you may be able to start the operating system in safe mode. From there, it may be possible to restore the hard drive to a previous condition using the recovery software hosted on the hard drive. If the drive won’t start at all, you may be able to correct the problem by using the recovery disc usually provided by manufacturers as part of the support resources that come with your computer’s hard drive.

If the user is unable to work around the damaged state of the master boot record, then the hard drive may need to be analyzed and repaired by a professional. This may involve extracting the saved data from the hard drive and rebuilding the partition table to save the drive. Many hard drives can be recovered and the saved data reloaded in a short period of time.
