Every parent’s biggest fear was hearing their child say the words, “Do you want fries with that?”
The word McJob is now part of the English language. It has its place in English dictionaries, but according to some, the term is outdated. A recent independent study showed that working for a company like McDonalds has a positive impact on young employees. It provides necessary work experience, improves people’s skills and can lead to better career opportunities.
However, the word McJob doesn’t seem to escape its original meaning, no matter how much McDonalds wants it. Although the Oxford English Dictionary planned to include the word McJob in the 1997 edition, they withdrew it for fear of legal reprisals from the company. As McDonalds is wont to do when faced with bad publicity, they lash out and threaten lawsuits.
A recent variation of the word McJob is McOfficeJob. This describes low-paying office jobs with no hope of promotion, such as those in call centers. Temp jobs are often referred to as McJobs simply because of the nature of the job. Employers sometimes keep a number of temporary staff on board because they don’t have to pay for vacation or sick leave. Many benefits available to permanent employees are not available to temporary employees.
Some psychologists claim that many workers can grow up to have a McJob mentality. People who perform in these types of roles long enough can become conditioned or brainwashed to love the job without stress. The fear of leaving McJob and taking on a responsible role has trapped many people in McJob for many years. Psychologists have gone so far as to equate the number of stars on a worker’s badge, signifying length of time with the company and the extent of brainwashing. It may not be long before health guidelines are established for McJob’s temporary worker.
