Medical carts are portable carts used to transport medical supplies, equipment, or patients. There are different types of medical carts, including accident, anesthesia, isolation, and mini carts. Crash carts hold commonly used supplies for immediate care. Anesthesia carts store medication for surgery. Isolation carts hold materials to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Mini carts are used to transport medication and food trays in healthcare settings.

A medical cart is any cart used in a medical setting. The cart is typically portable and helps transport medical supplies, equipment, or patients. The different types of medical carts include medical carts, accident carts, anesthesia carts, isolation carts, and mini carts.
A medical cart is a generic term used to describe a medical cart. Often, a medical trolley refers to the trolley used for the transport of medical devices. An example of a medical device transported on a medical cart is an electrocardiography (ECG) machine. This machine has wires that connect to the patient’s chest so that the caregiver can monitor the heartbeat. Other medical devices carried on a medical cart are ultrasound machines that allow nurses to monitor the baby inside the womb.

Crash carts are mobile carts used in hospitals to hold commonly used supplies. Carts are placed in high-volume areas like emergency rooms and include items like gloves, oxygen masks, and even a defibrillator. When a patient needs immediate care, medical personnel can turn to the crash cart for items needed to treat the patient’s condition.

An anesthesia cart is a type of medical cart intended for the transport and administration of anesthesia. These carts include drawers that close so your medication stays safe until you need it. When a patient requires anesthesia for surgery, the anesthetist will unlock the drawers and remove the required amount of medication. Some anesthesia carts are available with an electronic keypad that prevents access to narcotics without the code.

Isolation carts store materials such as gowns, masks, and gloves. To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, some patients may be quarantined. Doctors and other healthcare professionals use objects from isolation carts to protect themselves when coming into contact with isolated patients. Upon exiting the isolation areas, the gowns, gloves or other items are then disposed of rather than being returned to the medical cart.

Mini carts are another type of medical cart used in healthcare settings. A mini cart may consist of a single table with wheels such as those used by patients to place food trays or wheeled poles used to hold intravenous (IV) fluid bags. Nurses often use mini trolleys to transport medications on their rounds. As the nurse enters each patient’s room, the required medication is removed from the mini trolley and administered to the patient. Transporting medication on a medical cart allows the nurse to administer medication to multiple patients before having to return to the medication dispensary.
