What’s a Microprocessor?

A microprocessor is a computer processor configured into a microchip that initiates a computer’s startup and activates necessary components. It responds to mathematical and logical operations using registers and logical instructions. It remains efficient and productive, but can be replaced if damaged.

A microprocessor is simply a computer processor that has been configured into the design and function of a microchip. Sometimes referred to as a logic chip, this small component functions as a means of carrying out the command to initiate a computer’s startup. As part of the process, the microprocessor initiates the activation of all the components necessary for the computer to be used, such as reactivation of the operating system.

The basic functionality of this processor is all based on its intrinsic ability to respond and generate mathematical and logical operations. This is made possible by the use of registers, within which reside all the data needed to perform basic functions such as addition and subtraction. The configuration of the registers also allows the microprocessor to handle tasks such as comparing two different numbers and retrieving numbers from various areas and redistributing them.

At the heart of the project is a set of logical instructions that govern the order in which tasks are received and performed. The presence of the instructions ensures that the activities are performed in a sequence that will flow from the completion of one activity and the logical start of the next activity in the sequence. For example, when an end user boots up a computer, the first instruction that will be executed is to activate the BIOS, or basic input/output system. From that point on, the BIOS will load the operating system into active memory and move on to the next task in the boot process. Each next task will be achieved once the previous task is completed.

Typically, a microprocessor is a component that remains efficient and productive throughout the life of the computer. However, it is possible for the chip’s functionality to be damaged in some way, and when this happens, it is usually an easy process for a computer technician to replace the damaged chip with a fully functional one.
