Mixing tanks are used to blend materials in manufacturing facilities. They can be made of plastic, glass, rubber, or steel, with stainless steel being the most common due to its easy cleaning. Mixing systems or beaters are used to mix materials, and some tanks are self-cleaning. Chemicals are stored separately to avoid dangerous reactions.

A mixing tank is a container that is used to mix multiple components together. The material that a mixing tank is made of can range from plastic, glass or hard rubber to steel of all types. Stainless steel is often used in creating a mixing tank due to the ease of cleaning and smooth surface of the product. Copper is sometimes used in making a mixing tank; however, due to copper’s tendency to react adversely to certain chemicals, it is only used in moderation.

In most manufacturing facilities, it is common to use a mixing tank to prepare materials that will be used in production. Large containers of raw materials are placed in a large mixing tank and blended into a homogenous blend that can be used to produce a plethora of materials. In a bakery setting, a mixing tank might contain flour, yeast and water, all taken in specific quantities from smaller containers and placed in the larger tank to be mixed.

Many mixing tanks use a mixing system or beater to mix materials together. Some of these tanks resemble large concrete mixers with shovels attached to the sides of the tank. The paddles lift the ingredients from the bottom of the tank and tip them back off the top of the tank as it rotates. Other types of mixers look like large whisks just like the whisks used in a hand mixer. The beaters whirl the ingredients together and whip the air into the mix.

Those tanks relegated to mixing liquids typically only have hydraulic lines routed to and from the mixing tank. Since liquid ingredients are required, they are fed directly into the tank. When the liquids are mixed to the right consistency, they are carried from the tank to the next station through a pipe fixed to the bottom of the tanks. Many of these tanks are self-cleaning by running fresh water through a permanently attached hose. These tubes are typically actuated under vacuum by a remote motor or system centrally located to all mixing tanks.

Many chemicals cannot be stored together due to their reaction when mixed. By storing chemicals in separate containers and combining them in a mixing tank when they’re ready to use, the manufacturer is able to purchase a large quantity of each ingredient without having to deal with dangerous chemical reactions. This creates a safer environment for the workers and cost savings for the producer.
