What’s a Mobile Node?

Mobile nodes are devices that can connect to the internet from various entry points, allowing people to connect on the go. Examples include cell phones, laptops, and handheld devices, and routers can also be considered mobile nodes. Mobile nodes use protocols like Mobile IP to connect across any network without manually adjusting IP addresses.

Mobile nodes are devices that can connect to the internet from a variety of different entry points. The advantage of this type of Internet-connected device is that people on the go can connect to the Internet from a variety of locations. Thanks to the presence of a mobile node, it is possible to conduct business or simply enjoy surfing the Internet without being confined to the office.

Broadly speaking, a mobile node is any mobile device that can be used to make a remote or portable connection to the Internet. Within that definition, such Internet-connected devices as cell phones, laptops, and handheld devices can be considered examples of a mobile node. In any case, the device contains all the elements needed to connect to the Internet whenever wired or wireless connectivity is possible in any given location. Depending on the configuration, a router can also be considered a mobile node.

What distinguishes a mobile node from the traditional fixed type of Internet-connected device is that the system works around the more traditional type of connectivity. With fixed connections, the routing process assumes that the device will always have the same IP address. To get around this assumption, the node will use a protocol that allows it to connect to the Internet from anywhere without the need to manually adjust the IP address at the end user level. Software applications such as Mobile IP allow the node to connect across any network and enjoy the benefits of Internet access, a way that appears to the end user to be no more complicated than connecting from a traditional desktop computer.
