What’s a Mobility Agent?

Mobility agents are routers that manage online traffic when it is rerouted from a home network to a mobile network. They can be home agents or external agents with a care address, and are useful for accessing data in real-time while away from home.

In Mobile Internet Protocol terms, mobility agents are routers that help control the flow and integrity of online traffic when that traffic is rerouted from your home network to a remote or mobile network. The router can be a home agent that handles the data transfer or an external agent that converts and reads the data at the receiving end of the process. Both examples of mobility agent are in common use today.

When the mobility agent in question is a home agent, the router on the node’s network maintains the so-called care address. Essentially, this address works the same way as entering a shipping address at the post office. All incoming data received by the home agent can be stored and simultaneously sent to the mobile node. This process is usually referred to as tunneling.

The mobility agent type of external agent is normally a care address which has the form of a static IP address associated with the mobile device. This mobile IP address can be a temporary connection to a network that is used by the mobile device for a short period of time or a more permanent foreign agent that can be used regardless of the mobile device’s location. A co-located care address that is permanently in place is not uncommon when providers and customers wish to establish a node for communication between their respective networks.

A mobility agent can be an asset in many situations. Employees who move away from their physical home network location can use a mobility agent to connect and retrieve data they may need without relying on devices such as memory sticks or CDRs. Since the data can be received from the home agent, it is also possible to view and use the information of a real-time nature. This means that even data that was not available before the trip can be accessed once it has been uploaded to the home network.
