What’s a Moisture Meter?

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air, measured as relative humidity. A humidity meter, or hygrometer, can measure absolute or relative atmospheric humidity. Different types of moisture meters include psychrometers and hygroscopes. They are used for various applications, such as maintaining a suitable environment for pets, assessing building safety, and monitoring humidity in wine cellars and cigar humidors. Leonardo da Vinci and Robert Hooke built the first hygrometers.

Humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity, which is often measured when we talk about humidity, is the amount of moisture present in the air in relation to the maximum amount of moisture that the air could contain at that temperature, and expressed as a percentage. A humidity meter, also known as a hygrometer, is an instrument for measuring absolute or relative atmospheric humidity. A humidity meter can also be used to measure humidity in other contexts than air. Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci is said to have built the first hygrometer in the 15th century, and English scientist and inventor Robert Hooke also built a remarkable hygrometer.

There are different types of moisture meters. One type is a psychrometer. A psychrometer includes a wet bulb thermometer and a dry bulb thermometer, which are compared to calculate relative humidity. Another type is a hygroscope, which shows changes in relative humidity, but not the degree of change.

A moisture meter is employed for many different applications. A moisture meter can be placed in the soil of sensitive plants, such as orchids, to allow constant assessment of soil temperature and humidity to ensure the best growing environment. A humidity meter is typically employed to maintain an appropriate environment for different types of pets. It is typically used by owners of hermit crabs, snakes, anoles, frogs, tortoises, amphibians, lizards, tortoises and other terrarium dwellers.

In assessing the comfort and safety of the building, a humidity meter can be used. Keeping the humidity below 50 percent is said to help kill mold and mildew — or at least put them dormant — as well as lead to the death of dust mites, leading to fewer airborne allergens. It can also be an indicator for when a dehumidifier needs to be run. The hygrometer is also part of a standard weather set, along with a thermometer and anemometer. Many weather sets are stationary and hanging in a house or protected outdoor location, but there are also portable weather stations with humidity meters that are made to be carried in your pocket.

In other cases where humidity assessment is important, such as cigar humidors and wine cellars, a humidity meter can also be used. Special models of humidity meters for humidifiers may have markings to indicate the ideal humidity range. Cellar moisture meters can be part of or be used in conjunction with a cellar management system.
