Mopeds are bicycles with engines, but less powerful than motorcycles. They typically have two wheels, run on gasoline or electric power, and do not require a manual gear change. They are a popular and economical alternative to traditional transportation, with regulations and license requirements varying by location.

A moped is a type of bicycle that is powered by an engine, similar to a motorcycle, but with much less power. Considered as a super economical vehicle, mopeds are an option for those who want an alternative to traditional daily transportation. Although many styles of mopeds feature pedals like bicycles, the engine that mopeds are equipped with is one feature that sets the two apart. Regulations and license requirements for mopeds can vary in different places, but are generally not as restrictive as those for riding a motorcycle.

Sometimes referred to as a motorcycle, a moped will not reach speeds as high as motorcycles. Typically a moped will top out at around 35-45 miles (about 56 km) per hour. The engine size of a moped is never larger than 49 or 50cc, and anything higher will be considered a motorcycle.

It is not unusual for a moped to have three wheels. However, most models feature the two-wheel design. Using what is known as a two-stroke engine, mopeds generally run on gasoline and motor oil together. Some mopeds feature four-stroke engines, and these are generally less fuel efficient. Another aspect that distinguishes the moped from a motorcycle is the lack of a manual gear change.

Electric mopeds do not use gasoline as fuel, since these models are powered by a rechargeable battery. A 500 watt motor is the standard found on these models. However, electric mopeds are typically not as powerful as gasoline-powered models and typically do not reach the speeds of fuel-powered vehicles. An advantage of the electric moped is that you generally do not need to register as a fuel model.

Most mopeds, whether electric or gas powered, will have many of the standard motorcycle features such as brake lights and headlights. These vehicles will also feature a standard speedometer, often with a digital LCD display. These vehicles also come equipped with side mirrors. Hydraulic disc brakes are another typical feature.

Gasoline and electric mopeds can usually be purchased online or at a dealer. Some models require minimal assembly as well. The electric moped variety may feature a step-through design, although many of the gasoline-powered models do not have that feature. Most moped models have seats large enough to accommodate a second passenger.
