A non-discrimination policy ensures equal opportunities without prejudice in companies and institutions. It covers race, gender, ability, religion, political affiliation, national origin, and sexual orientation. Affirmative action encourages equal opportunities, and political correctness reduces discrimination risk.

A non-discrimination policy is an action plan adhered to by many companies and institutions which are committed to guaranteeing equal opportunities to any individual without any prejudice. This principle applies to people within the institution, who are also prohibited from discriminating against present and future people in the organization. This policy covers many characteristics of a person such as race, gender and ability.

Companies can apply the non-discrimination policy in terms of employment. For example, male-led industries should not judge a female candidate by her biological difference, but by her ability to work effectively within the company. Similarly, candidates with disabilities should be considered even if their disability is not relevant to the skills and abilities needed in the job position. The candidate’s age should also not be the deciding factor, whether the candidate’s skills are appropriate for the position. The policy also prohibits any workplace discrimination events, such as project offers, promotions, and pay rates.

Schools committed to a non-discrimination policy also offer equal opportunities in terms of scholarships, admission and treatment within the classroom. Reasons for granting educational opportunities should be as objective as possible, such as academic excellence. To further discourage any discriminatory acts, many universities usually have extensive offices and departments that handle harassment cases that violate the non-discrimination policy.

While race and gender are common characteristics subject to discrimination, a nondiscrimination policy includes other personal attributes. This includes religion, political affiliation, national origin and sexual orientation. Where appropriate, marital and veteran statuses may also be included.

Alongside the principle of a non-discrimination policy is another set of policies classified as ‘affirmative action’. This policy encourages the implementation of equal opportunities. Affirmative action can be very common among universities around the world, where an assigned number of slots are purposely reserved for racial minorities, the disabled, and the financially unfortunate. Companies may also have a quota or required number of women employed, especially in senior positions.

Non-discrimination policy can also implement political correctness to reduce any risk of discrimination. For example, instead of referring to a person as “white” or “black,” more appropriate terms like “Caucasian” and “African American” are used. Terms like “president” and “businessman” are replaced with “president” and “businesswoman”. Disabilities such as blindness or autism are also replaced with phrases such as “blind” and “mentally disabled”, respectively.
