Nutrients are any foods that provide nourishment to the body, including supplements, drinks, and traditional or non-traditional foods. Nutrients help growth, repair, and energy. The term “nutriment” was used in the 15th century and in Buddhism, nutrients can also exist in consciousness, sensory impressions, and intentions. Nutrament is a nutritional drink developed in 1960 as a vitamin supplement.

Any food that provides nourishment to the body can be called a nutrient. The nutrients help increase growth and development in humans and other animals. They provide energy to living creatures, allow for bodily repair, and allow life to take place in general.

Because a nutrient can be any number of things that provide food for the body, it can exist in a wide variety of forms. Vitamin and mineral supplements, sold as tablets, powders, or otherwise, are nutrients. Juice, milk, and other drinks that contain nutrients can be called nutrients. Any type of food that contains nutritional value, from casseroles to purees and fruits to vegetables, is a nutrient.

Prepared foods can be considered as nutrients as long as they retain their nutritional value. These can also include processed foods, such as microwaveable dishes and frozen dinners. Junk food and snack foods can also be nutrients, as they provide the body with some calories to use for energy. The same statement applies to fast food.

Non-traditional foods can be considered nutrients when appropriate. When there is a lack of food, for example, insects, wild plants, and other potentially unpleasant but edible items can be considered nutrients. In extreme cases, consumption by the other species has occurred in times of emergency or disaster, making humans a rare source of nutrients.

The word nutriment was commonly used to describe food during the 15th century. Historical fiction and non-fictional accounts from that period still use the word written. However, in modern times, the archaic term is generally substituted with the words food or nutrient. It is of Middle English origin and comes from the Latin words nutrimentum and nutrire, which means “to suckle”.

In Buddhism, a nutrient refers to the laws of nutrition, and can be one of four things. Like the nutrient overview, it can be an edible food. However, nutrients can also exist in consciousness, sensory impressions, and intentions. Of these components, the Buddha is said to have declared that “all beings subsist on nutrients.” Most of these nutrients, according to Buddhist philosophy, can be fostered by cultivating a mindful living practice.

A nutritional drink with a slightly different spelling, Nutrament, was developed by Novartis Labs in 1960. The drink was created to be used as a vitamin supplement. It is made from skim milk, sugar, minerals and vitamins and is available in various flavors such as chocolate, coconut and cappuccino.
