What’s a peristaltic pump?

A peristaltic pump is a type of pump that uses pressure and displacement to pump liquids through a hose without direct contact with the fluid. It works by allowing fluids to enter a tube and then compressing the tube with a rotor to push the liquid through the pump. It is commonly used in medical settings and for liquids intended for consumption. The pump is cheaper to manufacture than a liquid pump and requires hoses that are not corrosive and flexible or strong enough to withstand constant compression.

A peristaltic pump works by pressure and displacement. It is primarily used for pumping liquids through a hose, which is unlike most other pumps where parts of the pump actually come into direct contact with the liquid. It is one of the most common types of tools used to pump liquids, especially in medical settings. Because the pump’s mechanical mechanisms never come into direct contact with the fluid, it has numerous uses, especially in situations where sterile fluids are required.

A peristaltic pump works by allowing fluids to enter a tube. The fluid then flows into the pump body through the tube. Once there, a rotor with multiple rollers compresses the tube pushing the liquid through the pump and directing it to its final destination. This technique is known as peristalsis. Therefore, the tool is called a peristaltic pump.

Often, when using a peristaltic pump, fluids need to be stored in a pure environment. Therefore, the pipes must always contain the same fluid. However, this does not necessarily limit the operation of the pump, as the hoses can be replaced. This is often done, for example, in cases where an IV fluid is being pumped.

The pump also offers other benefits. For example, because the inside of the pump is dry, there is less need to worry about protecting the pump from moisture. Moisture remains inside the tube. Therefore, because less watertightness is required, the peristaltic pump is often cheaper to manufacture than a liquid pump.

The pipe also needs to be able to meet a couple of different requirements. First, the liquid type should not be corrosive to the pipe material. This is very important to prevent damage occurring inside the pump housing. The second consideration is that the tubing must be flexible or strong enough to withstand the constant repetition of being compressed, perhaps thousands of times in an hour.

Due to the sterility issue, the peristaltic pump is found to be very useful in the medical environment. It can be used in dialysis machines, heart pump machines and IV machines. Besides that, it can also be used for liquids intended for consumption. The cost of a pump can vary greatly depending on the application and the power source involved.
