What’s a Pipe Vise?

A pipe clamp is a tool with two half-circle jaws used to hold a pipe securely while working on it. Some designs have a linked chain component that grips the entire circumference of the pipe. Professional pipe fitters use a self-contained vise mounted on a tripod. Some welding vices have an electric motor to rotate the pipe for constant weld beads. In manufacturing, the pipe clamp is used to hold the pipe in place while workers assemble pipeline components.

A pipe clamp is a device that allows you to hold a pipe tightly. Complete with two half-circle jaws, the pipe vise can be tightened to grip a pipe and hold it securely while being worked on. Often a feature of a common bench vise, the addition of a pipe vise makes the bench vise an all-purpose tool capable of many more tasks. The teeth of the vise are critical to the successful grip of the tool, as rounded or blunt teeth allow the pipe to slip and roll even when the vise is tight.

Some pipe clamp designs contain a linked chain component that is used to grip and hold the pipe. By placing the chain around the pipe and clamping it in place on the vise, it is clamped by the vise handle and provides maximum clamping force. The chain’s ability to wrap tightly around the pipe instead of simply contacting two sides allows it to grip the entire circumference of the pipe, more than quadrupling the clamping surface of the vise.

Professional pipe fitters and plumbers often have a pipe vise mounted on a tripod. This self-contained vise can be placed at any job site the pipe fitter requires. By having the vise closest to the actual job site, the worker saves valuable time by not having to go back to a shop or work truck every time to secure the pipe in a vise. This design also allows for the vise to be positioned any distance from the job site, compensating for the differing lengths of tubing used in the project.

Some vices used in welding are equipped with an electric motor. This type of vise allows the welder to rotate the pipe as it is being welded. By rotating the pipe, the weld bead is able to remain constant from start to finish without having gaps or gaps in the bead. This rotational vise design is also available for pipe threading machines. When the tube is rotated in the vise, the wires are actually wound up at the end of the tube. The threads are installed to allow for threaded adapters, taps and fittings on sections of pipe.

In a manufacturing environment, the pipe clamp is a critical component in the assembly of pipeline components. The vise is able to hold the section of pipe in place while an assembly line worker does his job. Once the particular task is accomplished, the worker is able to release the pipe from the vise at his station and send it to the next station.
