A Pocket PC is a small, portable computer that can run sophisticated software applications and act as an extension of Microsoft Outlook. It has built-in wireless capabilities and can be used as a cell phone. It has a variety of designs and memory sizes, and battery life lasts four to eight hours. It eliminates the need to carry two devices and allows for conducting business anywhere with a cellular signal.

A Pocket PC is a smaller version of the full-sized computer you use at home or in the office. Although they are the size of a small diary, Pocket PCs are real computers. They have many of the capabilities of full-sized computers and can run sophisticated software applications. They are compact enough to fit in your shirt pocket and usually weigh four to six ounces (113-170 grams).

An early version of the Pocket PC was born in the 1990s. This was a small handheld device, called a Palm Pilot, that had basic organizer facilities. In 2000, Microsoft introduced a pocket version of its Windows operating system. The term Pocket PC is unique to personal digital assistants (PDAs) that use Microsoft systems.

A Pocket PC is a very sophisticated organizer. It can work as an extension of Microsoft Outlook software on your desktop PC. It can also access and update all data from desktop Outlook data including emails and appointments. Pocket PCs can be purchased in a variety of designs with different memory sizes. You can purchase additional memory cards to increase the memory size.

Battery life varies, but most usually last four to eight hours and can be charged quickly. Screen sizes also vary, but most are 3.5 or 4 inches (about 9-10cm) when measured diagonally. Color screens are high resolution, making graphics and text easier to read. Most have touch sensitive screens and can be read in direct sunlight.

The Pocket PC should also have built-in wireless capabilities, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth®. This gives you the ability to connect to the Internet and browse the web or compose, read and send email wherever you are. The Pocket PC also has the ability to act as a cell phone. Pocket PC integration with cell phone functionality eliminates the need to carry two devices.

Pocket PC software applications are almost similar to those of the desktop PC. Some have small flip-out keyboards on which memos, letters, and emails can be typed. You also work on spreadsheets, create PowerPoint presentations and take voice notes with the built-in recording device. Everything can then be saved and downloaded to your desktop PC via cable or infrared technology.
The Pocket PC means you no longer have to be tied to the office to conduct business. Wherever there is a cellular signal, you can conduct business as usual. The working day can also start with the daily train or bus to the office. This could be especially helpful for last-minute preparations for that morning meeting.
