What’s a Pond Yacht?

A pond yacht is a small, radio-controlled replica of a large sailing vessel that can provide hours of enjoyment at a local park or backyard pond. Popularized in the 1920s and 1930s, backwater yacht racing was a common sport in many ponds and city parks. There are no specific measurements for personal enjoyment, but there are stringent dimensional requirements for sanctioned racing. Hand-controlled pond yachts are available for owners who prefer a more nostalgic boat and for younger, entry-level boaters.

A pond yacht is a small, radio-controlled version of a large sailing vessel. Often built from the original drawings of a full-sized vessel, the pond yacht is a scale replica of a wind-powered ocean boater that can provide hours of enjoyment at a local park or backyard pond. Typically modeled after a single masted vessel, there are occasionally two masted pond yacht designs that may require a more experienced operator to navigate the small schooner effectively through the water. Commonly owner-built, these smaller-sized sailboats feature electronic servos that operate both the rudder and the sail and rigging components.

Popularized in the 1920s and 1930s, backwater yacht racing was a common sport in many ponds and city parks. The sport offered participants a chance to showcase their sailing skills without requiring expensive sailboats, slips and maintenance fees. Unlike the original versions of the pond yacht which required sailors to read the wind and set the vessel for a straight line course across the pond, modern boats incorporate a remote control option to adjust course as needed. Some competitions require boats to navigate through an obstacle course marked by floating buoys and flag-holders.

While there are no specific measurements to be met when building a small lake yacht for personal enjoyment, there are stringent dimensional requirements on both hull and sail size for those boats intended to compete in sanctioned racing. Much like the Soap Box Derby®, the organizations offer racing and yachting activities with points and seasonal trophies awarded to paid season ticket holders of purpose-built boats. Many clubs will allow the owner of a larger boat to sail smaller boats, however, the larger pond yacht is ineligible to win prizes.

There are non-remote controlled versions of the pond yacht available for owners who prefer a more nostalgic boat and for younger, entry-level boaters. The manual control system uses a handle and ropes attached to the boat to propel the boat in a straight line from shore. This type of boat requires the owner to walk the shoreline alongside the boat as it sails along the pond. One of the major benefits of hand control is the owner’s ability to recover a boat that has succumbed to a no wind situation. The hand controlled pond yacht is often able to be upgraded to a remote controlled boat with little work and expense.
