In bodybuilding competitions, a posedown is when contestants strike specific poses to show off their physique. Learning proper technique is important, and there are strategies to enhance or intimidate opponents. Judges focus on attitude, energy, and charisma, and points earned in a posedown can boost a contestant’s ranking.
A posedown refers to the part of a bodybuilding competition where all or some of the contestants are on stage at the same time. Participants strike various poses, highlighting specific muscles and their general physique. Possessions are usually the final part of the competition.
Although building muscle is the main goal of any bodybuilder, learning to pose is also important for competition. There are a multitude of poses that the body can strike, but usually only eight specific poses are considered in the competition. The poses are meant to show all aspects of the bodybuilders physique. Poses can often decide a close competition, so learning proper technique is considered part of training for a bodybuilder, and not just an afterthought.
Most competitions have several sections where each bodybuilder goes through specific poses. The pose is almost always the last part of the event, and typically the top five contestants will be on stage at one time. Although the stances may seem like a simple matter of going through the stances, there are strategies that competitors adopt to enhance or intimidate their opponents.
Some bodybuilders like to stick to a set routine for the posedown. They can keep the flow going and show off their muscles. Other competitors may attempt to intimidate your competition by forcing them into another pose, which may upset your preset routine. For this reason, some competitors like to go through a spontaneous routine and keep the competition off guard.
From a judging point of view, the posedown is used for the ultimate comparison between bodybuilders, but points are often not awarded for each pose. There are several rounds before the posedown where each contestant shows her poses individually, so this is used to compare bodybuilders side by side. The judges focus not only on the contestants’ ability to pose, but also compare attitude, energy, and overall charisma. Points awarded for the posedown are based on the overall opinion of the judges of the bodybuilder. Although not as significant as points awarded in previous rounds, points earned in a posedown can boost a contestant up a spot or two.
For the most part, the posedowns are part of the show for the audience. Bodybuilders get a chance to show off to the crowd. Judges can’t award points to a certain competitor for a pose, but they will remember the bodybuilder in the future and that can be an advantage.
