Today’s poultry farming is in contrast to the family farming of yesteryear. While in the past, a single family farm often sold eggs and raised chickens for sale, this function was often one of the many ways the farm produced both food and income. Commercial agriculture efforts today tend to be more focused and use sophisticated technology to monitor production status and rate.

At any given poultry farm, it is very likely that visitors will see different types of birds in addition to hens and roosters. Such a farming operation may include turkeys, ducks and pheasants among its residents. In some operations, the chickens graze freely on the farm. This is often true of organic farming facilities. With other commercial breeding efforts, chickens are segregated and are rarely, if ever, allowed to wander outside an area reserved for a particular type of poultry.

It is not unusual for a poultry farm to also raise chicks for sale to pet stores and family breeders. Many farms also offer ancillary services such as debecking to attract a wider clientele. Each of these additional services is usually not included in the basic unit rates, but is available at an additional cost.

One of the major expenses of any large poultry farm is feed for the livestock. Often, the feedlot consists of items such as corn, ground soybeans, whole grains, and rice products. Along with food, livestock care is also a significant expense. Larger operations often bring a full-time veterinarian on the payroll, effectively providing chickens, ducks and other birds with round-the-clock medical care as needed.

Along with meat and eggs, poultry farming often makes use of anything to do with poultry. The feathers plucked from the carcasses are cleaned and sold for use in pillows, sleeping bags and winter coats. The manure is collected and converted into fertilizer. Even by-products such as beaks and claws can be ground up and used as ingredients in various types of pet food.

Today’s poultry farming is one of the most profitable operations within the agricultural industry. Some of the older farms have been around for decades and show no signs of slowing down.
