A pressure trap is an opening in a wall that stops the flow of gas or liquid to measure pressure. It must be perpendicular to flow direction and material. It reduces noise and damage in exhaust systems. A pressure test machine ensures correct installation.

A pressure trap, or static pressure trap, is an opening within the barrier or wall that binds the flow of a material. This material that is stopped by the faucet can be a gas or a liquid used to gauge and measure the amount of pressure pushing the material through the system. The opening made by the tap is always perpendicular to the direction of flow inside the system to avoid flow interruptions. Pressure tapping systems are also commonly referred to as piezometer ports, as piezometric units can be installed at the ports to measure the amount of static pressure within the system.

Pressure tappings are commonly used in systems with flows pressurized to the point where they create noise within the system which translates into noise outside the system. For example, some vehicles require these taps in the exhaust system before the muffler unit to reduce the amount of pressure pushed into the muffler through the exhaust pipe. In this case, the pressure tapping is used to measure and relieve excess pressure from the system so that both noise and the likelihood of damage to the exhaust system or engine are substantially reduced.

One of the most important considerations when working with pressure tapping is that the direction of the tapping must be perfectly perpendicular to the material flow as well as the material from which the system wall is made. Any directional change in the faucet within the system will create resistance or flow, allowing air to enter the system in a directional manner. This could change or disrupt the amount of pressure and material flow.

The orifice that is used to create the pressure tap being perpendicular to the flow creates a means for material to pass through the system without any change or disruption to the material flow of the system. The hole diameter determines where the hole becomes a means of escape for excess material or where pressure is released once the allowable amount of pressure is exceeded within the system. In order to guarantee the correct installation of a pressure test point, a pressure test machine or jig is created which guarantees the perfect perpendicularity of the tap in the system during drilling or tapping of the system.
