What’s a private tutor’s role?

Private tutors provide one-on-one instruction and assistance in various subjects, including academic work, music, and sports. Anyone with experience in a subject can become a tutor, and retired teachers often choose to mentor students. Personalized instruction from an expert is highly beneficial for students.

A private tutor is an individual who works one-on-one with students to provide extra help and instruction in a particular subject. For younger students, tutors can provide general help with schoolwork, such as helping students develop good study skills or helping them prepare for tests. A private tutor may be paid for this work or may do so voluntarily. Some colleges and universities will offer faculty credit for tutoring other students as long as the student completes a specified number of hours per semester, but this is not common.

Virtually anyone with experience in a particular subject can decide to become a private tutor. In many schools peers or older students teach each other or older students work with younger students. In colleges, students working on a particular course may work with students who need to take courses on that course but may be struggling. Students majoring in English or Communications, for example, often work as private tutors at a “writing center” or other study center on campus to help students write and edit their work for class.

An individual who is currently not a student may choose to become a private tutor as well, as they can often earn money from these services. Retired teachers, for example, often choose to mentor students, and parents are more comfortable with that too. A teacher can work with a student on a specific area where he or she is having trouble and provide assistance, or the teacher can develop lesson plans to help students more generally. Individuals who are simply experts in certain fields may also decide to become private tutors, whether or not they have taught professionally.

Private tuition is not limited to academic work. Private tutors may also exist for individuals learning a musical instrument or working on their voice. Students who are particularly dedicated to a sport, such as those looking to get a college scholarship, can hire someone to work with them individually to develop the skills they need to succeed. There is almost no better way to learn than to receive personalized instruction from someone who is an expert in the field, which is why so many people choose to work with a private tutor at some point in their lives.
