A pump hoist is a device mounted on a truck used to replace submersible pumps and well pipes. It consists of a tower with a pulley, a hoist, and a cable. The hoist lifts the pump out of the well casing for maintenance, and the pump is reconnected after repairs. The size of the hoist determines the size of the truck, and hydraulic stabilizers are used for large pumps.

A pump hoist is a device that mounts to the back of a truck and is used to haul and replace submersible pumps and well pipes. Resembling a large truck, the pump hoist consists of a tall tower with a pulley attached to the top. The pump hoist also incorporates a large hoist that is mounted in the bed of the truck and has the hoist or winch cable going up and over the top of the tower pulley and down into the well casing. The tall tower allows a well repairer to pull entire lengths of well pipe up and out of the well during pump maintenance.

The typical submersible water well pump motor is connected to a steel cable accessible through the top of the well stand. Once the cover is removed, the pump hoist can be hooked up to the cable and the pump can be lifted out of the well casing. As each section of well pipe is pulled out of the well, it is removed and the pump lifting hook is lowered to hook back onto the next section of pipe. Finally, all sections of pipe are removed from the well casing and the pump, which is attached to the final section of well pipe, is pulled out of the casing.

Once the necessary repairs have been completed, the pump is lowered into the well casing and the well pipe sections are reconnected. A series of unhooking the pump hoist and re-attaching it to the next length of pipe is repeated until the pump is positioned again at the bottom of the well. The pump hoist is manufactured in multiple sizes to work well with pumps of all sizes, from the domestic unit to the largest irrigation pumps used in commercial agricultural applications.

The size or lifting capacity of the pump hoist determines the size of truck on which the pump is mounted. The type of hoist used to pull the average home water well pump is commonly mounted on the bed of a pickup truck. This allows the operator to be able to maneuver the vehicle around the typical yard to access the water well. Large irrigation well pumps can be the size of a small car, so these types of pump lifts are commonly fitted to very large trucks and fitted with hydraulic stabilizers to prevent the trucks from tipping over once the large pumps have been installed. lifted off the ground.
