Rail cars are vehicles used for transporting cargo or passengers on a rail system. Passenger cars often have amenities like heating, air conditioning, and toilets, while freight cars transport raw materials and components. Military forces also use rail cars for transportation and defense.

A rail car is a vehicle used to carry cargo or passengers on a rail transportation system. Often many railroad cars are grouped together; This grouping is called a train. Some types of rail cars, usually passenger cars, can run autonomously, but most need to be connected to a locomotive. A locomotive is a railroad car that provides movement for the train and usually has no payload of its own.

The passenger car is a common type of railway car, as many people like to travel by train because of the low price and convenience. Modern passenger cars often come equipped with internal heating, air conditioning, and toilets. For long-distance travel, many trains with passenger cars also include dining and entertainment cars to make journeys more bearable or even entertaining. Some even include sleeping cars that sometimes have small rooms for the convenience and comfort of their passengers.

Another common type of rail car is the freight car, which is used to transport a wide variety of different objects overland relatively quickly and cheaply. Freight cars are often used to transport components to various mechanical devices, such as automobiles and airplanes. They are also commonly used to transport raw materials from the area where they are extracted to the factory or plant where they are refined or used to make products. Some automobiles, known as tank cars, are used to transport liquids and gases. Public and private armies often use trains to transport military supplies to where they are needed.

Almost all of the railroad cars on a train are “revenue cars,” meaning they carry cargo that generates money for the railroad. Railway companies also have “non-revenue wagons”, which mostly include maintenance vehicles for use on the railway. Freight cars and passenger cars are considered revenue cars, since passengers and businesses pay for the use of the cars.

The military also uses rail cars for defensive purposes, too. Armored wagons can be assembled with a wide variety of weapons such as machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, and anti-tank weapons. Others are equipped with armored sleeping quarters for the troops and are used to transport them over distances. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union even used train cars as mobile missile silos, effective in transporting missiles to optimal launch positions. The military use of the trains resulted in the sabotage of the railroad tracks by opposing military forces, as such sabotage could damage an army’s transportation infrastructure until supplies needed to repair the tracks could be acquired.
