Recreation aides organize recreational activities and events, monitor equipment inventory, install equipment, organize social gatherings, handle event tickets, and perform clerical duties. A high school diploma is usually sufficient, and organizational and interpersonal skills are important.

Working as a recreational aide can be rewarding for people who enjoy working with the public and organizing recreational activities. Typically, these individuals are employed by parks and recreation departments, hospitals, and community centers, and may oversee a variety of events. While having a bachelor’s degree is favored, it is usually possible to obtain this type of position with just a high school diploma. Some common tasks of a recreation aide include monitoring equipment inventory, installing recreation equipment, organizing social gatherings, handling event tickets, and performing clerical duties.

Monitoring equipment inventory on a regular basis is usually a big part of being a recreation helper. For example, an individual might be responsible for keeping track of items such as soccer balls, tennis rackets, tables and chairs. This may involve accounting for items, storing items, and cleaning them to extend their lifespan. To be effective in this role, a person must have excellent organizational habits.

In addition to keeping track of inventory, this position often involves installing recreational equipment. If a recreational assistant is supervising a soccer game, for example, he or she may need to bring soccer balls, shin guards and a beverage station for the players. On the other hand, for a game of bingo, the chair may be responsible for setting up tables and chairs and bringing bingo cards and chips. In many cases, this involves picking up needed items from storage and transporting them to their intended location.

Another common responsibility of a recreation aide is organizing social gatherings like parties or meetings. He usually decides to reserve a venue, set a date and time, send out invitations, and handle the catering. In some cases, he may also need to hire people such as musicians, speakers or other performers. Hence, it helps an individual in this position to be well organized and good at planning.

Handling tickets for various events is also part of this job. For example, a recreation aide might sell tickets to a sporting event or verify tickets as customers enter a facility. In some cases, he may also work at a concession stand and sell food and drinks to event goers.

Also, a recreation assistant sometimes performs multiple roles in the office. This can involve things like answering phone calls, sending faxes and sorting emails. He can also help the recreation leader take care of any other tasks that come up. This aspect of the job requires a person to have good interpersonal skills and be able to multitask.
