Magnetic trainers are the next best thing, and they are more affordable than fluid resistance training units. These units tend to be a bit stronger, and the ride quality isn’t quite as good as a fluid trainer, but a mag trainer will still provide strong resistance that can often be easily adjusted using an adjuster on the unit or using a resistance mounted on the handlebar lever. The adjustability isn’t as precise as a fluid trainer, unfortunately, but it is more adjustable than a wind trainer.
Wind trainers are the least likely to break down, but they are also the loudest and least impressive when it comes to ride quality. This type is best for the beginning cyclist or a cyclist who is on a tight budget when it comes to purchasing such a unit.
