What’s a Retweet?

Retweeting is when a Twitter user reposts another user’s tweet to share it with their followers. It can be done by pressing a button or manually typing “RT” and the original tweeter’s username. Giving credit to the original poster is important and successful retweets can build relationships and increase followers.

A retweet is an activity on the Twitter site in which one user’s comment, or tweet, is reposted by another user. It can also refer to the reposted tweet itself. Twitter users repost messages to their Twitter streams so their group of followers can see the original tweet. Retweeting is a way of sharing or spreading interesting, funny, or important messages beyond the initial source. The retweet can be achieved by simply typing or by pressing a button.

Users who come across an interesting tweet can simply hover over the tweet, find the “retweet” option, and hit it. A notification will ask the user to confirm that they want to Retweet the message to their followers. Users who do this should press “Yes”. Below the tweet, a message should appear telling the user how many users have retweeted the same post.

Alternatively, Twitter users can retweet a post manually. To do this, users can get to their update field and type “RT”, short for “retweet”, and hit the space bar. This will let a user’s followers know that what they are about to read has been posted elsewhere before. Then, users can type the “@” symbol and copy and paste the original tweeter’s username directly after the symbol. For example, if the original poster’s name was “TwitterUser,” a retweeter would type “RT @TwitterUser” into the box.

Anyone posting a retweet can then press the space bar again. After that, they would have to copy and paste the tweet they would like to repost. Using the example above, if the retweet was “This has been retweeted”, the entry in the status update box would look like this: “RT @TwitterUser This has been retweeted”. Finally, the retweeter can hit the “Tweet” or refresh button so that his Twitter stream is updated with the retweet and his followers will see it.

However a Twitter user retweets a message, the user needs to ensure that credit is given to the original poster. Many new Twitter users make the mistake of simply copying an attractive tweet and updating their Twitter status without mentioning the original author. This is considered a Twitter faux pas.
One benefit of retweeting is that it can help build relationships with other Twitter users. Successful retweets have access to original posters and can see which users have retweeted their posts. Retweeting can result in an increase in followers for the original poster, so the original poster may respond by retweeting a retweeter’s original posts as well.
