A rich Internet application functions like a desktop program but requires uninterrupted internet access. It doesn’t need to be installed and may require additional programs or specific browsers. It’s as powerful as a desktop program and may not take up space.
A rich Internet application looks and functions like a locally installed desktop program, except that it is used over the Internet. Without Internet access, there is no way for a computer to open and use the rich Internet application. Unlike a traditional program that must be installed via a hard drive and added to a desktop, this application doesn’t take up space and doesn’t go through the installation process. At the same time, some applications may only work on certain Internet browsers, or programming languages or other additional programs installed may be required to open these applications.
Unlike other Internet applications that have only few features or low power, a rich Internet application is meant to be as powerful as a regular desktop program. This means that users, outside the Internet to use the program, should not notice any difference between the functionality of Rich Internet programs and desktop programs. There are other similar programs, known as thin client programs, that are accessed from a server; this is similar to a rich internet application but because the server is involved it is classified differently.
One of the major differences between an advanced Internet application and a desktop application is how you access them. A desktop application is launched from a desktop, while an Internet application is accessed through the Internet. This means that the computer must have uninterrupted Internet access or the program will not start or stop working when the connection is lost. While this may be a disadvantage for people who have poor Internet capabilities, it usually makes the programs easier to use for people with good Internet connections.
When someone buys or receives software, it usually needs to be installed. Installation is rarely long, and some programs take up nominal space on your hard drive, while others take up more space. In most cases, an advanced Internet application is not installed; you may need to download it, but this is also rare.
At the same time, it may be necessary to install other programs. Some advanced Internet applications cannot function properly without a backup, and these supplemental programs provide it. Unlike desktop applications, where each program is installed individually, the one additional program should be able to support many Internet applications. There is also the possibility that the rich Internet application only works in a certain browser or that some features work better in a certain browsing environment.
