What’s a riser clamp?

[ad_1]

A riser clamp supports vertical pipes and ducts by transferring their weight to the building. It is made of two halves that screw together and are slid around the pipe before being re-secured with bolts. Riser clamps are available with slotted holes and come in different sizes and coatings.

A riser clamp is a device used to support vertical pipes, ducts, and pipes in various areas of a structure by transferring the weight of the pipe to the clamp and the building. The riser clamp is designed in two halves. Each half has arms extending from each side and a semi-circular area in the middle to fit around the pipe and create a full circle when the halves are joined. The sides of the clamp screw together and are slid around the pipe before being re-secured with bolts which are tightened with a wrench to hold the pipe in place by friction.

Riser clamps are available with slotted holes that allow the bolts to be loosened without being completely removed; this allows you to slide the clamp over and around the pipe. Once the riser clamp is in place, the bolt is tightened into place. These clamps also have a serrated washer nut attached to the bolt so the bolt can be tightened into place without needing a wrench for each side. Some riser clamps do not have the slot open and must be unscrewed completely to fit around the pipe. After seating, a bolt is slid through the hole and a nut is tightened on the back of the bolt.

Several areas of construction and plumbing use the riser clamp. It can be used to hold vertical plumbing pipes in place on each level of a building. Riser clamps can also be used to hold vertical duct in place, both indoors and outdoors. Standard riser clamps hold riser pipes in place by friction of the clamp tightened around the pipe; the arms extend beyond the hole through which the tubing is passed and hold the tubing in place from any pull of gravity. Riser clamps can be purchased with curved legs, rather than arms, allowing them to be bolted to a wall or other structure to hold piping in place and away from the wall.

Riser clamps come in a variety of sizes to accommodate different sizes of piping, tubing, or ductwork. Most riser clamps are made from carbon steel, but are available in a variety of coatings for different types of building needs. Copper, electrozinc, red oxide primer, and epoxy are some of the coatings available for purchase, depending on the type of duct or pipe being installed. Copper coatings are used on copper piping primarily for identification purposes, while the electro-zinc coating helps provide corrosion protection. Red oxide and epoxy are recommended for suspending vertical steel pipes.
