What’s a Rodbuster?

A rodbuster is a construction worker who inserts metal bars or rods into concrete to strengthen building construction. They need physical strength, stamina, and geometry skills to avoid bad building construction. Rodbusters work with contractors to plan the construction of the building.

A rodbuster sounds like a tool that breaks rods, or someone who breaks rods for a living, but that’s not the case. A rodbuster is someone who works on a construction site and fixes metal bars and rods into concrete to keep the building from collapsing. Many skills are required to be an effective rodbuster, such as physical strength and knowing how to use tools, as well as knowledge of geometry. Without good geometry skills, rodbusters may bend a rod too much or not enough, which can ruin the building’s durability. Most rodbusters will need certifications to use rod bending tools, and most of the training is done on the job, but a degree in mathematics can be helpful.

When a building skeleton is being made, there are large concrete shapes at the bottom for the foundation. While concrete is strong, it’s not invulnerable. This is why it is called a rodbuster to help protect the skeleton of the building. He or she is responsible for inserting metal bars or rods into the concrete to further create the skeleton and strengthen the building construction. Without a rodbuster, buildings could collapse in a relatively short period of time.

Rodbusters and contractors typically work together to properly plan the construction of the building. First, the contractor will work on the concrete forms and review the plans with the rodbuster. The rodbuster will then make plans for how to insert the metal rods into the concrete for the best durability, and the two will go over those plans and make any revisions. Because of this, a rodbuster needs great teamwork skills to avoid conflicts at work and to avoid bad building construction.

While the machines are primarily used for bending and manipulating metal, physical strength and stamina are essential for rodbusters. They need to move heavy tools, use them on large pieces of metal, and move constantly. Along with stamina, a rodbuster needn’t be afraid of heights or feel dizzy at certain heights. Rodbusters often work at high altitudes, so they need to be able to work in these conditions.

Perhaps more important than strength to a rodbuster are geometry and math skills. If the rodbuster doesn’t know how to properly measure angles or how best to secure the building, then everything can collapse. This is why most rodbusters will need a degree in math such as geometry. Most other requirements, such as knowledge of tools, can be taught on the job. Certifications may be required to use some of the tools.
