What’s a romance scam?

A romance scam is when someone forms a fake romantic relationship online to extort money. The scammer contacts the victim through email or dating sites, promises love and future together, and asks for money. Victims should be cautious and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

A romance scam occurs when one person forms a pseudo-romantic relationship online with another in an attempt to try to extort money from them. Victims believe they are in a real relationship, only to later find out they have been scammed. The lucky ones are the ones who realized what was going on before actually losing their money.

Someone who is trying to carry out a romance scam will contact another person via email, through a dating site or any other means of communication via the Internet. This person then works to form a friendship with the hope that it will eventually lead to a pseudo-romantic relationship. In some cases, the transition from one level to another is extremely rapid and the victim believes she is involved in a whirlwind romance. The scammer then makes the move for the money and, in some cases, actually gets it.

It is important to be careful not to get involved in a romance scam when talking to someone on the Internet. The scammer may use sweet words to make you fall in love with him or her, and may make promises of a future together that he or she has no intention of keeping. Some actually go so far as to propose marriage to keep you entangled in their lies. These people know how to prey on emotions and feelings and have no qualms about taking advantage of you to get what they want.

When trying to pull off a romance scam, the scammer uses elaborate excuses in an attempt to get you to send money. He or she may ask for money for airline tickets to come see you, only to never show up and explain how the tickets were non-refundable. In some cases, scammers even use the excuse that they are having trouble paying their bills or that they are in a desperate medical situation and need money. Requests for money are often followed by a promise to pay back every penny. Whether they ask you for your bank account information, have money transferred, or send cash or a money order, these are signs that the person you’re talking to isn’t who they say they are.

One way to avoid getting caught up in a romance scam is to be incredibly careful with your online activity. If someone asks for money, chances are you’ll never see a cent of it again. You should never send money, no matter what reasons you give for needing it. Also, your personal information should be kept private, as it can be used by scammers to access your money, whether or not their requests are initially met.

If you realize that someone is trying to scam you, report it to the authorities immediately. Cease all communication with this person and any incoming correspondence should be blocked. While love can be a beautiful thing, there are those who seek to harness emotions and a kind heart to their agenda.
