What’s a rope harness?

[ad_1]

Wire rope slings are used to lift and move heavy loads in construction and manufacturing. They can be made of fiber or heavy-duty wire, with a loop at each end connected by a length of string. Safety regulations require regular inspection, and custom designs are available but more expensive.

Also known as safety harnesses, wire rope slings are devices designed to lift and move heavy loads from one location to another. This type of conveying equipment is often used on construction sites as well as in manufacturing plants where large quantities of supplies or finished goods need to be moved quickly and easily. In the past, a wire rope sling was often constructed using good quality fiber rope. Today, many brands are built with heavy-duty wire, which helps increase efficiency by reducing wear and tear on the harness.

The design of a basic rope sling is simple. The device has a loop at each end, with a length of string connecting the two ends. The loops are usually made of the same materials as the length or body of the rope and are strong enough for the harness to be wrapped around the object and secured in place by attaching a knot to the two loops. More complex rope sling designs follow the same basic pattern, but can use a variety of rope lengths or multiple splices to create designs that distribute the weight of objects more efficiently. The length of the rope, as well as the size of the rings, will depend on the type of tasks the particular harness is designed to perform.

Safety regulations enforced by government agencies require that any wire rope sling used on a factory or construction site must be inspected regularly. The inspection often focuses on the condition of the rope. Any frayed areas or sections where the harness appears to have weakened will usually require replacement or at least reconditioning of the harness so that the device can continue to handle the same weight load it did in the past. This is important, as failure of a wire rope sling could cause significant damage not only to goods in motion, but also to people in the immediate vicinity when the failure occurs.

Manufacturers of different models of wire rope slings sometimes offer the possibility of custom designing a harness for a specific purpose. This usually requires vendor representatives to meet with the customer and identify the intended purpose of the device. From there, a design can be developed that meets customer expectations and also complies with applicable safety regulations. As is true with most custom equipment, a specially designed wire rope sling will be more expensive than other mass-produced designs.
