Rotary Hoist is a brand of automotive hoists that produces light and heavy lifts for cars, trucks, and buses. They offer scissor lifts, Y-Lifts, double post hoists, and four post slewing jacks. Their SmartLift® is designed for small service areas. All models have mechanical safety locks.
Automotive hoists, also known as car lifts, are used to lift vehicles off the ground for technicians to make repairs. The term rotary hoist refers to a specific brand of hoist. This company manufactures light lifts for lifting standard cars and heavy lifts used for servicing large commercial trucks and buses. Numerous varieties are available, including scissor lifts, Y-Lifts and several hydraulic versions.
The rotary hoist company was founded in 1925 and produced the world’s first hydraulic lift for vehicles. The brand is a subsidiary of Dover Corporation. Rotary’s headquarters and main office are both located in Madison, Indiana.
There are different types of rotary lift products. The lightest model in the Rotary range is the low rise scissor lift. This lift design is intended to lift passenger cars and light trucks and has a rated capacity of 10,000 lbs (approximately 4536 kg). A slightly larger version called the Y-Lift is rated for 12,000 lbs (approximately 5343 kg).
Rotary offers several models of double post hoists for cars and trucks. These two-post lifts use two opposing steel columns to lift a vehicle using hydraulics. The hydraulic cylinders inside a rotary elevator are synchronized by cables. This synchronization prevents one side of the lift from rising faster than the other and keeps the vehicle level during the lift. Two post hoists are available in capacities ranging from 10,000 to 18,000 lbs (approximately 4536 kg to 8165 kg).
Four post slewing jacks are designed for heavy commercial vehicles including semi-trailers and passenger buses. As with the two-post version, the four-post hoists use hydraulic cylinders that are kept synchronized by cables. Heavy-duty hoists are available in lift capacities of 40,000 and 60,000 pounds (approximately 18144 and 27216 kg) and use drive-over platforms called tracks to hold vehicles as they are being lifted. All two and four post rotary hoist models are equipped with mechanical safety locks which engage automatically. These blocks prevent a vehicle from falling onto a lift in the event of a loss of hydraulic power.
The Rotary SmartLift® lift is designed for small service areas that cannot accommodate ordinary two- or four-post lifts. In a Rotary SmartLift®, the hydraulic systems are contained in a securely sealed cartridge. This cartridge is installed underground. When using the lift, hydraulic cylinders lift off the floor to lift a vehicle. The mechanical structure of the SmartLift® rotary hoist lowers when not in use. SmartLift® units are available in capacities typically ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 lbs (approximately 4082 to 5443 kg).
