What’s a SASE?

A SASE is a self-addressed stamped envelope that is sent to a company or individual, containing postage for them to send something back. It saves time and money for both parties and is commonly used for product inquiries, publishing submissions, autograph requests, and contest entries.

SASE is an acronym for a self-addressed stamped envelope. Simply stated, a SASE is an envelope addressed to you and containing postage so that the recipient can send you something in return at your expense. A SASE is often requested when contacting a company about its products or services.

The SASE will be contained in another outer envelope which is addressed to the company or business and also contains the appropriate postage. It is often necessary to fold the SASE so that it fits inside the outer envelope. The concept of a SASE is that if an individual is required to provide postage and envelope, a business, charity or organization can save money on consumer responses. The SASE also saves the responder the time that would have been spent addressing the envelope.

In addition to the request for information, there are other reasons to use a SASE. Writers often include a SASE when contacting publishers or agents about material being considered for publication. Sometimes companies will ask you to send a SASE along with a payment so they can send you a receipt in return.

A SASE is often used when requesting the autograph of a celebrity or athlete. Individuals entering a contest often attach a SASE to receive a list of contest winners upon the contest’s conclusion. In the UK, SASE is abbreviated to SAE, or stamped and addressed envelope.

Some funny things can happen if you are not meticulous when submitting a SASE. If you put the wrong envelope outside, you will be sending your letter or inquiry to yourself. On the SASE, you must write or type your name and address in the center of the envelope. Use the normal first class postage rate unless otherwise stated and place the postage in the top right hand corner of the envelope. Make sure you place the appropriate postage on the outer envelope as well.
