Scaffold hoists are used to lift materials and workers to upper levels of buildings under construction. There are various types of hoists, including motorized and manual systems, with different designs for different purposes. The larger and more elaborate systems are used for bigger projects, while smaller systems are used for lighter jobs. Hoists can be mounted directly onto scaffolding or use jib cranes to lift materials.
A scaffold is a temporary structure constructed on the outside of a building or structure under construction, which allows workers access to upper levels of that building or structure. Workers often need to lift materials to such heights, so a scaffold hoist is used instead of manually lifting materials, which can be stressful and dangerous, or even impossible. There are many types of scaffolding hoist models for different purposes; some smaller units use a boom arm with a pulley mounted on it, while other systems have entire moving platforms that can lift people and materials.
The latter scaffold hoist system is much more elaborate and must be constructed and maintained carefully. The system features a lifting platform mounted on specially designed scaffolding sections and is propelled upwards via a motorized rack and pinion system. Such a scaffolding winch is likely to be used on larger construction projects on which heavy materials and large numbers of workers need to be hauled. For smaller buildings and structures, this system will generally not be necessary.
Instead, smaller structures may require the use of a small jib crane scaffolding hoist. This system has a vertical arm which supports a horizontal arm, at the end of which a pulley is mounted. A cable will run through the pulley, usually wrapping it several times around it, and then fall to the ground. A hook is mounted at the lowest point of the cable, which in turn can be hooked to a load to be lifted. Smaller pulley systems can be operated manually, while others are motorized and controlled with switches. Motorized units are usually reserved for larger jobs, while hand-cranked jobs are only used for lighter jobs. Sometimes a rope is used instead of a cable, although fiber ropes tend to be less strong and are not used as often or for heavy work.
Another type of scaffold hoist can be mounted directly to the scaffold piping. It will work much like a winch or ceiling hoist and will usually be motorized. This system uses the same system as the jib crane, except without the jib crane. The system will feature a large pulley around which a cable will be wound numerous times. A motor will spin the pulley, either pulling the cable out or back. A hook is fitted to the end of the cable so that it can be attached to the objects to be lifted.
