What’s a screw anchor?

Screw anchors are used to provide a secure grip for screws in thin, light, or brittle surfaces. They prevent screws from coming out and can be applied from the outside of a surface. Expansion anchors provide pressure and prevent sliding. Self-drilling anchors can be screwed directly into walls. Users must drill appropriate holes for other types of screw anchors. They are commonly used for hanging objects on walls and are sold according to the weight of the object to be fixed.

A screw anchor is a piece of hardware that holds a screw in place. This hardware is usually used when the surface into which the screw is drilled is too thin, too light, or too brittle to provide a secure grip for the screw threads. Anchors come in a wide variety of types, materials and price ranges and can be used for both light and heavy-duty applications.

Screw anchors generally serve the same kind of purpose as a nut attached to the back of a bolt or an earring back attached to an earring post. They prevent the screw from coming out of the hole it was screwed into. When the back of the screw is in an unreachable place, such as inside a wall, a nut or similar piece of hardware cannot be used. Screw anchors, however, can be applied from the outside of the wall or another surface.

Screw anchors are most commonly used when hanging things on walls, so they are often called wall anchors or dowels. The drywall used in most modern homes often crumbles too easily for the shallow threads of most screws to be effective. The addition of a screw anchor provides a firmer hold for the wires.

Some types of anchors called “expansion anchors” also provide pressure on the opposing surface which helps hold the screw in place. When this type of screw anchor is driven in, part of the anchor protrudes through the back side of the drywall or other surface. This part of the anchor expands several ways, so it’s larger than the hole it was placed through. This prevents it from sliding back through the hole.

When a picture or other object is hung from the screw, the dowels also provide a surface across which the pressure caused by the picture’s weight is distributed. This prevents the weight of the picture or other hanging object from pulling the screw back through the hole. Expansion anchors can also be used on boats, on the floor or in many other situations.

Self drilling anchors are usually made of plastic or metal. They have a slotted head and taper to one point and can be screwed directly into the wall. These hollow anchors are formed with both inside and outside threads. Once the anchor is in the wall, the screw can be driven into the internal threads, creating a secure connection. When driven in, the size and pressure of the screw causes the end of the anchor inside the wall to expand to be larger than the hole.

When using other types of screw anchors, the user must first drill a hole appropriate to the size of the anchor. The anchor is inserted through the hole and automatically expands or expands when a screw is driven in. Both types of screw anchors are usually sold according to the type of support on which it will be screwed and the weight of the element to be fixed.
