A senior fellow is an experienced and successful member of an elite academic group. Requirements to become one include being a regular colleague for a suitable period, passing proficiency exams, and providing evidence of achievement and education. Senior fellows may have different duties depending on the organization. In some cases, a regular scholarship is used instead of a senior scholarship. Honorary fellowships may also be awarded. In the business world, large companies use the scholarship program to appoint experienced scientists and engineers as fellows.

A senior fellow is the most experienced or most successful group of an elite group of people who work together as peers in an academic setting or institution. While the word fellow traditionally refers to males, females can also be considered a senior fellow under this definition of the word. The duties and responsibilities of a senior colleague differ depending on the organization the colleague works with.

To become a senior fellow, there are normally several requirements that must be completed. Firstly, the candidate must be a regular colleague for a suitable period of time. So he’ll probably also need a nomination from two other senior colleagues. He may also be asked to pass a series of proficiency exams, provide evidence of substantial achievement, and provide evidence of extensive training or education. There are usually very few senior scholarships awarded each year and the competition for them is intense.

In some organizations there are no senior scholarship options and a regular scholarship is used instead. In these cases, a fellow is a high level of membership, as opposed to members or associates, both of which refer to lower levels of membership. Depending on the organization, a senior fellow may also be an integral part of that organization’s governing body. Using a democratic system, senior colleagues can vote on procedures, financial decisions or even to resolve disputes.

In some organizations, such as the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge, a prestigious cultured society, fellow is the term for all members. Honorary fellowships are sometimes awarded. Some organizations or corporations bestow this title on a professional peer as an honor for performing outstanding service or achieving special achievements. Depending on the organization, an honorary member may not be a member of the actual organization. This type of fellowship often has no real responsibilities or duties, but has all the privileges that membership would offer.

In the business world, there are corporate colleagues. Large companies operating in industries that require intensive research and development to be competitive often use the scholarship program as well. These corporations appoint a small number of experienced scientists and engineers as fellows. Among the companies using the scholarship program are IBM, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. In these companies, awarding an employee a fellowship is the highest honor one receives, and fellows are given ample independence from their research.
