A senior mechanical engineer has extensive experience and may lead projects and manage other engineers. A degree and relevant experience are required, as well as good communication and computer skills. Customer relations and compliance with laws may also be part of the job.
A senior mechanical engineer is someone who has worked as a mechanical engineer long enough to have outstanding experience in the field. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is likely to lead specific projects and may be responsible for managing other engineers. Mechanical engineers are people who design and build mechanical systems of various types and may have specific goals. An engineer may, for example, work exclusively on automobile design, although many engineers work on a variety of projects in specific fields.
An engineering degree is required to become a senior mechanical engineer, and in some cases, an advanced degree such as a master’s or Ph.D. may be required. In other cases, an engineer may simply work in the field long enough to gain relevant experience and then be promoted to the position of senior mechanical engineer. The number of years the engineer spends in the field and the specific qualifications the engineer acquires over the course of a career will qualify him or her for a senior engineer position. Certifications and compliance with local laws may also be required in some regions of the world.
Other responsibilities of the Senior Mechanical Engineer may have to do with customer relations. The engineer may need to consult with the customer on a regular basis to ensure the product design meets the customer’s needs, and any changes to the design may need to be done by the end user to ensure it meets that customer’s needs. The engineer may also need to communicate with other engineers and suppliers who may be making specific parts for the device being built. Excellent communication skills will be required, especially if the Senior Mechanical Engineer is leading an engineering team that includes other engineers, machinists or designers.
Computer knowledge and skills are also required to be a successful senior mechanical engineer, as many of the design processes the engineer will undertake are performed on computers. Computer aided design (CAD) programs are commonly used by engineers, as are computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in the manufacture of parts. The engineer may not only need to be able to use such programs, but also instruct others how to use the programs correctly.
