What’s a service platform?

Service rigs are used for maintaining oil and gas wells, not drilling. They can be expensive, so some companies rent them. Crews assemble and operate the rig, which can be dangerous, but high wages and benefits are offered.

A service rig is a piece of equipment used to service wells such as oil and gas wells. Service platforms are not intended for drilling, but for performing other tasks related to the operation of oil and gas wells. Some well operating companies maintain their own service platforms, while others prefer to rent them because they can be very expensive. Specialized teams run service platforms when needed for routine maintenance and emergencies.

Once a well is drilled and productive, it requires periodic maintenance. This is where a service platform comes in. When components need to be replaced or a well needs to be cleaned, it is done with a service platform. Similarly, when a well needs to be shut in for whatever reason, the crew uses a service platform to complete the tasks associated with shutting in the well and keeping it safe.

Service platforms are loaded onto large vehicles that transport them to the well site. The equipment itself is a telescopic tower secured with guy cables that keep it parked in place. Accessories can be installed on the service platform to complete various tasks associated with well service activities. In special circumstances, accessories can be added to a service platform to allow you to drill.

Also known as completion crews, repair crews, or haul units, service crews are run by a team of individuals. Crew members assemble the rig, confirm that it is safe and working properly, and complete their assigned task in the pit. It is necessary to have several people both for safety and because some tasks cannot be completed by one person. People who are just starting out are known as “thugs” and work their way up to more advanced positions such as tool pushers.

Working on a service platform can be dangerous. The equipment is large and heavy and, when not properly installed and maintained, can present safety risks. People are also exposed to the risk of electrical shock when working with well maintenance equipment, and may be endangered by environmental toxins that may be present around oil and gas wells. In recognition of the dangers, oil and gas occupations can come with very high wages along with benefits. Employers also often have to pay for high liability and disability insurance because worker claims are much more likely than with other trades.
