What’s a Set Screw?

Set screws secure objects together, preventing movement and allowing them to function as intended. They are usually made of brass or stainless steel and have an internal mechanism for attachment. The pointed end can vary in shape, with cupped and flat tips being the most common. Set screws are used in a variety of applications, including doorknobs and industrial devices. Hex set screws require special tools for tightening, while slotted screws are easy to use.

A set screw is a unit of hardware designed to secure one object within another. The set screw prevents relative movement between the two objects, which allows each to function as intended. These screws are usually made of brass or stainless steel and are designed to go through the outside object and rest on the inside object without going through it. In the UK, this type of fastener is usually known as a set screw rather than a set screw.

Set screws are typically attached using an internal mechanism rather than a traditional external head. The top of the screw may be slotted for use with a screwdriver or may have a hex shape. Slotted screws are simple to use and require no special tools. Hex set screws can be subjected to more torque for a tighter connection, but require the use of special tools such as Allen keys.

The pointed end of a set screw can come in a variety of different shapes depending on the application. The most common is the cupped stitch, which is cupped slightly to meet the surface of the internal object. It is used for permanent or semi-permanent installations and provides a high level of security and control. Taper point screws have a very sharp point that can penetrate the internal object to hold it in place permanently. While this type of fastening forms a very tight bond, it often causes damage to the internal object which may not be desirable in some applications.

Some types of set screws allow for a more flexible installation. Those with flat tips are convenient and easy to install, but can be moved around without damaging the internal object. The oval shaped grains have a point that is the inverse of a cupped point. The rounded edge rests against the internal object to minimize the risk of damage or penetration. An oval adjustment screw is the most practical type for situations where internal and external objects require regular adjustment.

A set screw can be used in a variety of different applications. One of the most common uses is in doorknobs or lever locks. The handle or knob is attached to the door, then covered with a separate plate, known as a “rose”. A set screw is inserted through the rose to prevent it from rotating around the handle or knob mechanism. These screws are also used in many industrial and mechanical devices, especially rotating items such as pulleys or wheels.
