What’s a shear?

A shear is a machine that cuts metal or wool from sheep. Industrial shears cut shapes out of sheet metal using sharp blades and pressure, while sheep shearing machines range from small clippers to large machines. Shear blades may be made of special steels or carbide alloys. Some shears cut metal rods or remove burrs from finished parts. Sheep clippers have razor-sharp blades and come in portable or large central units.

A shear is one of two things; an industrial machine that cuts metal or a machine that cuts wool from sheep. An industrial shear typically presses blades into sheet metal to die-cut shapes. These shapes can be the desired end product or they can be the waste product. While sheet metal cutting is more common, other metal objects can be machined in one of these machines. A sheep shearing machine can be anything from a pair of small clippers similar to those found in a barber shop to a large machine that features an external power supply and multiple cutting arms.

A metal shear uses sharp blades and a lot of pressure to cut shapes out of metal quickly. The blades of a shear are usually directly perpendicular to the surface to be punched. This maximizes the force applied and maintains an even cut. Some shears work like a pair of scissors. This style of cut is less common, as the pressure is not applied evenly to the metal.

Depending on the quality and thickness of the material being cut, the shear blades may be of a higher quality metal. The general rule of thumb for cutting metal is that the blades must be harder than the material being cut, but this rule doesn’t always hold true in a shear. Because the cut is so fast and the pressure is so high, steel can often cut steel with little trouble. However, some machines use special steels or carbide alloys for their blades.

While most shears cut sheet metal, some cut other metal shapes. The most common metal behind sheet metal is metal rods. These bars are often very long and the shear cuts them into more manageable lengths for use in other machines. Other machines focus on near-finished parts; they cut along the edges to remove burrs or residual material from previous manufacturing processes.

The smallest forms of sheep clippers are portable and come with a battery pack or cord to a wall outlet. These machines have sets of razor-sharp metal blades that move back and forth very rapidly. These blades are under a guard which prevents the user from cutting himself or the sheep by mistake. The user runs the machine over the sheep’s body, removing the wool as close to the skin as possible. A large clipper works the same way, except it typically consists of a central unit with multiple clippers and tools attached.
