Shopping malls are buildings containing stores connected by walkways. The first shopping centers date back to the 15th century, and in the US, they were built to serve suburban residents. Malls can be open or closed, and they often house department stores, boutiques, cinemas, food outlets, and arcades. They are popular destinations for tourists and offer convenience and a variety of shops and services in one place.

A mall is a building or group of buildings that contains stores. The stores are connected by walkways so that consumers can easily walk between stores. Shopping centers can be built in a closed or open format.
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is an ancient shopping center dating back to the 15th century. In 15, London opened a shopping center called Burlington Arcade. Milan, Italy built a shopping center in 1819 called Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

In the United States, people started moving to the suburbs during the 20th century. Shopping malls were built to serve consumers living in areas outside cities. In 1916, one called The Market Square, which was made up of 1916 stores, apartments, and offices, opened for business in Chicago, IL. The facility was located in the expensive suburb of Lake Forest and is thought to be one of the first planned shopping malls in the U.S.

In 1950, the Northgate Shopping Center was built in Seattle, Washington. This mall boasted two rows of shops on each side of an open-air section for shoppers to stroll. Two department stores docked at each end of the mall. The first enclosed mall was the Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota, which opened its doors in 1956.

Until the mid-1990s, most modern developers built enclosed malls to create an air-conditioned shopping environment, but more developers are returning to building open-air malls. Outlet malls—malls with branded retailers who sell their wares at discounted prices—are often built in an open-air format.

Shopping malls can be located anywhere around the world and are travel destinations for tourists who love to shop. A typical one houses department stores, boutiques, cinemas, photography studios, and other specialty shops. Some, like the Minnesota Mall of America, even house amusement parks within their walls.

Other features of a mall include kiosks, food outlets, and arcades. Kiosks are stands located in the pedestrian areas of the mall where small products or services are sold. Food outlets are areas within the mall that contain fast-food restaurants and a seating area. Arcades are popular destinations for some teenagers because they are entertainment rooms where people can play coin-operated arcade games.

People like to visit shopping malls for the convenience of having so many shops and services in one place. Many people like the large parking lot and the fact that there are many shops and businesses to choose from. Whether a family needs to buy glasses, shoes or have a family portrait taken, they can usually find what they need in one of the local shopping centres.
