What’s a slide control?

A slide check valve is used to safely vent gas from a pressurized system without depressurizing the entire system. It is commonly used in paintball marking systems and allows for quick and safe correction of problems during gameplay. The valve is operated by manually moving a barrel-shaped sleeve and can be mounted singly or as a dual component. It is similar to a check valve, which allows gas or fluid to flow in only one direction.

The purpose of a slide check is to allow the user to safely vent gas from a pressurized system without depressurizing the entire system. This valve is mostly found in paintball marking systems. It could also be used with other pneumatic devices, such as nail guns or pressurized spray paint guns.
While playing paintball, sometimes debris or other problems could interfere with the operation of a marking gun. If this occurs, the player would have to stop, depressurize, and then fix the paintball system. This is usually done by closing the control valve attached to the cylinder.

This procedure is slow and cumbersome, especially during a quick game of paintball. Some players may benefit from others experiencing this issue. To avoid this nuisance, the player could install a slide check valve.

When a paintball system is equipped with a slide check valve, the user can quickly dump the contents of the marking gun and correct the problem. After the problem is corrected, the user can quickly repressurize the gun and continue with the paintball game. The swipe control allows the user to fix the problem quickly and safely while minimizing downtime during gameplay.

The player operates the slide control by manually moving a barrel-shaped sleeve. As the barrel-shaped sleeve continues to travel, it locks a check valve in place and prevents any remaining gas from moving downstream. As the barrel sleeve continues to travel, a vent opens on the upstream side, releasing the pressurized gas into the atmosphere. After correcting the problem, the player moves the barrel sleeve in the opposite direction. This repressurizes the upstream side of the system by closing the vent and unblocking the check valve.

A slide check valve can be mounted singly or as a dual component incorporated within a quick disconnect coupling assembly. The construction of a quick release valve and a slide check valve is similar and as such it is practical for both units to be incorporated into a single mechanism. Each type of valve can be purchased and used separately.

The term “slip check” is also used for a similar and more widely used valve known as a check valve or one-way valve. A check valve allows a gas or fluid to flow in only one direction. Traditional check valves are opened and closed mechanically by a change in the flow direction of a fluid.
