What’s a slit diffuser?

A slot diffuser is a narrow component used in HVAC systems to supply air to a room. It is designed to fit into tight spaces and can be hidden from view. Slotted diffusers are typically located at the end of ducts in each room and offer a high level of control over airflow. They can be installed in various ways and are more expensive than traditional diffusers.

A slot diffuser is a building component used to supply air to a room. These diffusers serve as a critical component in a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Unlike traditional square or round diffusers, a slit diffuser features a long, narrow design. This special shape makes it easy for builders to fit these speakers into tight spaces and helps hide the speaker from view to create a more aesthetically pleasing design. A slit diffuser may also be known as a linear or linear slit diffuser in some areas.

Central heating and cooling systems distribute air through a building via a series of metal ducts. A slit diffuser is located at the end of the duct in each room and allows heated or cooled air to enter the space. Each slit diffuser features a linear plenum or box that fits above the ceiling. This plenum helps improve airflow and allows air to enter the space at an even and constant rate. The surface of the slotted diffuser typically features a series of adjustable fins to further control and direct the airflow.

Contractors can use a number of slot diffuser installation methods. They are typically hidden within a suspended ceiling, but can also be placed in partition walls or plasterboard ceilings. Some projects call for these speakers to be installed in soffits above a window or in a built-up area below a window sill. In some applications the diffuser can also be placed on the floor. In rare cases, linear slit diffusers can also take the place of an exhaust grille to return air from a room to the heater or air conditioner.

Slotted diffusers offer a number of advantages over traditional square or round diffusers. They are an unobtrusive way to provide air to the room and are designed to blend in with the surrounding finishes. Slit diffusers also provide a high level of control over the design and layout of a space and allow users to use fewer diffusers while delivering the same volume of airflow.

Compared to other types of diffuser designs, slit diffusers are generally the most expensive method of air distribution. An HVAC system equipped with linear slit diffusers will cost more in upfront material costs than one equipped with round or square diffusers for the same volume of air. The linear plenum design also generates more noise and allows for higher pressure drops than more traditional diffuser designs.
