A solution architect creates, designs and implements the technology infrastructure of a business. This position has been around for decades, but with advances in technology, the role has become largely technical. There are a number of specific roles related to these careers, including utilizing knowledge of software and hardware systems, identifying systems solutions, and participating in key areas of a company’s operation.

One of the main focuses of any solution architect’s description is the ability to define a company’s current problems and future goals from a technological point of view. Developing and applying new forms of software and hardware is often an important part of this role. This type of architect is well versed in many different areas of the business he or she works for. This familiarity with the work allows him to devise the most effective technical plans to solve problems and move the company toward its goals.

The technology systems in each department of a company operate differently, at least to a small extent. The solution architect draws on his knowledge of these systems and their inherent divergences to design programs that achieve the highest business intent. He or she is in constant communication with many different departments in the company, mainly senior level employees, board members, sponsors and technical gurus, in order to execute the new plans.

There are numerous areas of a company in which a solution architect works. Business development, business planning, general management, mentoring, and quality assurance are just some of the fields that often require this architect’s knowledge and guidance. He or she may also be called upon to train and educate staff on the finer points of any new technology that has been implemented and often work closely with supervisory junior level technical staff.

Job requirements vary depending on the industry or the scope of the project being addressed. Some work in companies and others are hired as external consultants. The vast majority of solution architects have extensive project management experience and have had some degree of lead development work. A development lead works at an intermediate level between developers and solution architects, maintaining communication between the two about the project at hand, training and mentoring coders and other technical teams, and helping to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
