What’s a Special Day Class?

[ad_1]

A Special Day is an educational program for children with severe mental, emotional, and learning disabilities. It focuses on social skills, self-control, and academic curriculum tailored to individual needs. The small class size is staffed by special education trained teachers and assistants. The goal is to help children integrate successfully into their community.

A Special Day is an intensive educational program designed for children with special needs. A child may be eligible for this program if they have severe mental or emotional disorders and learning disabilities. These problems must be severe enough to cause the child difficulty performing in a regular school setting or less intensive alternative special education programs, or to be at risk of harming himself and/or other classmates.

This program focuses on helping children develop social skills and self-control. Attention to academic curriculum is also important, however, children who need a special classroom are often intellectually capable of learning the material. In this case, learning difficulties may be a symptom of emotional problems and therefore need to be addressed before the child can fulfill his or her academic potential.

The range of intelligence level of children in this program as measured by IQ can range from below average to exceedingly high. As such, their academic education is usually tailored by an Independent Education Plan (IEP) to suit each child’s individual needs and abilities. Children diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism, as well as some gifted children, often require and benefit from a special daily lesson.

A special day class is normally composed of a very small number of students, generally with a maximum class size of ten students. It takes place in a structured environment where students stay in one or two rooms for the whole day. Class is usually held during the same hours as in a normal school setting, unless the child is able to handle the length of a typical school day. The room is staffed by at least one special education trained teacher and assistants who help provide the children with a personalized education.

The program is designed to help children integrate successfully into their community. Most aim to get children to the point where they can go back to school with their peers and ultimately live healthy, productive lives.
