A payroll clerk is a member of the payroll department who focuses on tasks that help organize the company’s employee compensation data. As part of this periodic payroll management process for the business, this person is often also responsible for calculating and applying various deductions on the amount of pay owed to each employee. While the payroll process was once a completely manual activity involving a series of ledgers, the majority of employees today use payroll software.

The payroll clerk’s job is not limited to preparing payroll audits. In many cases, he will also monitor and record each employee’s attendance information. The employee can also track other pertinent details, such as commissionable sales, bonus qualifications, accrual of personal or vacation days, and other factors that affect the overall compensation package for each employee.

It is not unusual for this employee to also handle other disbursements associated with withholding. For example, he will file withholding taxes to the appropriate federal and state agencies. To work at larger companies, this employee will usually need at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a year or two of experience with a smaller company, and some experience working with one or more payroll software programs.
