What’s a stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorized device used by roofers to safely lift heavy objects onto a ladder-mounted platform made of aluminum. The platform travels up the ladder via a cable or rack and pinion system controlled from the ground. The lift is activated by a hand lever and most use an engine-mounted pulley.

A stairlift is a device used to lift heavy objects onto a ladder-mounted platform, usually made of aluminum. Roofers and other workers who commonly work on roofs or other high places will use the stair lift to safely carry heavy items that would otherwise have to be hand-carried up the ladder. The hoist itself is usually motorized for added convenience and safety, although it has added weight to the ladder system. These machines are generally quite compact, making them easy to transport to different job sites.

An aluminum ladder frame is the key component of the whole system. This ladder must be rated to handle the additional stress of the ladder lift system and most hoists of this design come with a ladder included to ensure the correct unit is being used with the motorized platform. The platform is attached to the ladder and will travel up the vertical stringers of the ladder via a cable system or a rack and pinion system which in most cases is controlled from the ground. The motor is mounted to the base of the ladder, adding convenience when servicing and further stability by adding weight to the base.

Controlling the stairlift requires the user to be on the ground at the base of the stair. A hand lever can be pushed down to activate the ladder lift system; the platform will climb the ladder to a person standing at the top, waiting to receive materials on the platform. Once the unit reaches the top of the ladder or the desired height, the ground operator can press the hand lever, stopping the platform. Sometimes the stairlift is equipped with a braking system for greater convenience and safety. Once the platform has been unloaded, the lever can be operated again, bringing the unit back to the ground.

Most lift systems of this type use an engine-mounted pulley. A cable is wrapped around the pulley and as the wheel moves in one direction, the cable is released; when the wheel moves in the other direction, the cable retracts. The cable will be threaded from the motor pulley at the base to the top of the ladder; it will then often pass through another pulley mounted high up, and the cable will return to the bottom of the ladder where it will be attached to the platform.
